QUALITY YOU CAN TRUST! |
|
|
|
Many people mistakenly believe that they
must actually see a diamond to determine its quality.
However, with a grading report and a little education,
it’s easy to know whether a diamond meets your requirements.
After all, only a trained gemologist with the proper
equipment would truly be able to determine a diamond’s
quality by seeing it. With a report you always know what
you’re getting—according to the exact measurements,
proportions and grades listed on the report—regardless
of whether you’ve seen the stone.

BEFORE THEY GO IN YOUR DIAMOND RING
A Diamond is the hardest substance known to man. Diamonds are a mineral formed over a billion years
ago 100’s of miles below the earths surface. Volcanic eruptions brought these exotic
minerals closer to our planets surface where they could be recovered. No other natural
substance on earth generates the allure of a finely cut and polished diamond. However,
diamonds mined from the earth do not possess these traits naturally.
A four to five step process takes place that involves master craftsman, planners and
cleavers, working together to extract the hidden beauty out of this exotic mineral.
The following information will give you some insight into the process of taking a diamond
from the mine and producing the beautiful piece of diamond jewelry or diamond engagement
ring that captures our attention. |

DIAMOND ENGAGEMENT RING -- A TRADITION
The use of a diamond ring in wedding ceremonies actually originated with the 15th century nobility in Europe. This tradition did not pick up in the United States until the 1930's. Prior to the 1930's, rubies, sapphires, and opals were mainly used in engagement rings. DeBeers changed the American perception of Diamond engagement rings by launching a massive advertising campaign. Since the 1940's, diamond engagement rings have become a symbol of a couple's engagement.
DIAMONDS - WHEN FOUND IN NATURE
Diamonds found in their natural state do not look like the
finished product you see in diamond jewelry and diamond rings. A diamond found in
nature is grayish in color, dull in appearance, and requires proper polishing and
cutting before it becomes that sparkling stone in your diamond engagement ring. While the majority of diamonds are colorless, scarce
varieties of yellow, blue, green, black, pink, and even red diamonds also exist.
Diamonds are made of a clear pure compressed carbon in an isometric crystal structure.
Diamonds are actually carbon atoms linked together to form a lattice structure.

MARKING AND CLEAVING THE DIAMONDS
A rough diamond is first examined by a planner to get the largest size, the least amount of inclusions and
to optimize the diamond's brilliance. By marking a diamond, the planner reduces the amount
of the diamond that is lost in the cutting process. The planner decides the cut and shape,
location of inclusions and the direction of the facets. The diamond is then marked to show
where the diamond will be sawed, laser trimmed or cleaved. If the planner decides that
the stone requires cleaving, then the stone is placed in the hands of a specialist known as
a cleaver. His job is to pre-shape rather large diamond pieces into more manageable sizes
so that sawing can take place. This is a very critical stage in the diamond process
because a mistake made here by either the cleaver or the planner can shatter the stone.
SAWING THE DIAMONDS
Depending on whether cleaving was required, this is the second or third stage in the beautification
process of a Diamond. A Diamond is such a strong gem; it takes an immense amount of strength
to saw it. Only another diamond or laser can cut it. A thin phosphor bronze disk rotating at
a speed of 4,000 rpm is used to shape the diamond. The diamond is securely clamped while the
blade of the disk saws into it against the grain of the diamond. Diamond dust gives the blade
the hardness needed to cut into the diamond.
GIRDLING THE DIAMONDS
The next stage in the cutting process is to cut a round stone. This process is called girdling.
A diamond is secured in a lathe. The diamond while spinning in the lathe is placed into
contact with a second diamond that shapes it into the desired shape.
|
 |
FACETING - DIAMOND ENGAGEMENT RINGS AND DIAMOND JEWELRY
Once Girdling is complete the diamond is handed over to a lapper or blocker, who specializes in placing the first 18 facets on a
brilliant-cut diamond. A second worker called a brillianteer places and polishes the
remaining 40 facets, if the stone is cut in the standard brilliant-cut design.
The final step is polishing.

|

|
DIAMONDS - POLISHING THEM
A polished diamond looks completely different from its rough form. A polished diamond is
what you find in your diamond ring. When a diamond is polished, it is clamped down
and sprinkled with diamond dust. The coarseness of diamond dust polishes the diamond
and gives it a very smooth finish. This is the final stage in the diamond process
and its objective is to produce a finished gem that brings out all the brilliance
and optical properties of the cut.
